Best Spot to Get Chicken Wings in Each State

Best Spot to Get Chicken Wings in Each State

Chicken wings may be popular in many places but none so much as the United States, where demand is high and continues to rise. From sports events and barbecues to wing-eating competitions like the Wing It On! U.S. Chicken Wing Eating Championship in upstate New York last fall, where James Webb ate an astounding 276 wings in 12 minutes to defeat reigning champion Joey Chestnut and set a new world record. And of course, there is the ultimate time when the consumption of wings far exceeds that at any other moment — Super Bowl Sunday.

The popularity of wings was jump-started back in 1964 when the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY, began creating their now iconic Buffalo wings, which have since become a national phenomenon. In 1977, the then-mayor of Buffalo declared July 29, to be National Chicken Wing Day, a holiday still celebrated today (International Wing Day is July 1). From pizzerias to dive bars to barbecue joints, wings are ubiquitous. What started as an inexpensive byproduct of chicken processing, typically discarded or thrown into the stock pot, is now in such high demand that the supply chain can’t keep up.

24/7 Tempo reviewed and extrapolated from listings, rankings, and reviews on numerous websites, including Food & Wine, Tasting Table, Food Network, Yelp, as well as numerous regional and local sites to assemble a list of the best spot to get chicken wings in each state. Some of these restaurants are devoted solely to wings and offer multitudes of sauces and spices to choose from. R&R Extreme Wings, a small chain in Indianapolis with three locations, has 18 different sauces including sweet chili, lemon pepper, Bourbon, garlic parmesan, and Cajun.

Also included on this list are sports bars, barbecue spots, chicken-and-waffle eateries, and other restaurants that happen to have a dedicated wing following. For example, Chik’n & Mi in Louisville, KY, is an Asian fusion fried chicken and soup restaurant where fried wings come glazed in sweet soy sauce or hot jeow bong (Lao chili) sauce. (Other Asian countries, including Thailand, Korea, and Japan, have their own fried chicken culinary traditions. (This is the best fried chicken joint in every state.)

Most often the wings come deep-fried and then glazed in a flavorful condiment — but sometimes they come dry-rubbed, smoked, grilled, and even served “naked.” Some restaurants serve whole wings, while others split them into drumettes and wingettes, discarding the wing tips. All restaurants have a multitude of sauce varieties; we’ve chosen to highlight a few.
