12 of the Most Underrated Girl Bands

How many girl groups do you know and adore? Music lovers likely have at least a couple on their mind already. There are tons of girl groups around the world that haven’t gotten attention or clout over the years, though. Female musicians joining together to release catchy songs as a team is nothing new. A girl group can’t be considered “underrated” if their songs are played on tons of radio stations. They don’t classify as “underrated” if most people generally know exactly who they are. Some of the most popular girl groups in history have been Destiny’s Child, Fifth Harmony, The Pussycat Dolls, Spice Girls, and TLC. These beloved girl groups paved the way for girl groups of the future to reach higher levels of success. Still, we know of plenty of underrated girl groups who deserve to be discussed more often.

To come up with this list of the most underrated girl bands ever, 24/7 Tempo consulted several music-centered websites. These include Billboard, Metro, and Music Grotto.

Doll Skin

Doll Skin was formed in the 90s as a punk rock band full of women. The band members met each other while attending the School of Rock in Scottsdale, Arizona. Along with being known for their punk sound, they blend a lot of metal, pop, and alternative into their music. The band members are Alex Snowden, Meghan Herring, Nicole Sander, and Syd Dolezal. Some of their biggest songs have been “Puncha Nazi,” “Don’t Cross My Path,” and “When They Show Their Teeth.”

The Chiffons

The Chiffons is a girl group that originated in the heart of New York City back in 1960. They were originally signed to Laurie Records where they released music that fit into the Pop genre. The members of this girl group included Judy Craig, Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee. These women worked together to continue recording epic music for years. Some of their biggest songs were “He’s So Fine,” “Sweet Talking Guy,” and “A Love So Fine.”

Billie

Billie is a girl group that debuted in November 2021. They’re currently signed to Mystic Story Entertainment Agency and they consist of seven members. At first, there were only six young ladies involved. Later, they decided to add an additional singer to the lineup.The members who form this group are Moon Sua, Tsuki, Suhyeon, Haruna, Siyoon, Haram, and Sheon. One of the biggest songs to date is called “Ring X Ring.”

Girlschool is a group that originated in London back in 1978. At the time, there was a wave of interest from British folks regarding the heavy metal music scene. Interestingly enough, this rock band is still active today after recording music together for more than four decades. The original members of the band are Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams, Kelly Johnson, and Denise Dufort. Some of their big songs include “C’mon Let’s Go,” “Race with the Devil,” and “Don’t Call It Love.”

Xscape

There’s a lot to be said about the talented members of Xscape. The girl group was formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1991. First, there were five members of the group including Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott, Tamera Coggins-Wynn, and Tamika Scott. Coggins-Wynn decided to part ways with everyone about a year after they got started. Her exit turned them into an instant quartet. Their music fits into the R&B music genre.

Little Mix

Little Mix is an English girl group that came together from a reality TV show called “The X Factor.” Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, and Jesy Nelson performed for the British version of the show and built a massive fan base. In 2020, Nelson decided she no longer wanted to be involved with the girl group. The remaining three have been pressing on. Some of their biggest tracks include “Secret Love Song,” “Black Magic,” ” Power.”

Cherry Bullet

K-pop is a big deal in the music world. Cherry Bullet is a new girl group that is starting to gain some traction. Following their 2019 debut, they’re working their way toward true success. The group consists of several talented singers and dancers including Hirokawa Mao, Heo Ji-Won, Kim Bo-ra, Choi Yu-ju, and Kato Kokoro. Some of their biggest songs so far have been “Hands Up,” “Really Really,” and “Love in Space.”

Meanstreak

Although New York is often thought of as a great homebase for Broadway stars and theater actors, it’s also a great starting point for musicians. Meanstreak is a girl group that came together in the big apple in 1985. Their music falls into the thrash metal category and they’ve got five active band members today. The women involved are Bettina France, Marlene Apuzzo, Rena Sands, Lisa Martens Pace, and Yael Devan. “Straight Thru the Heart,” “Lonely Side of Town,” and “Take You to the Limit” are some of their hits.

VIVIZ

Another noteworthy K-pop girl group that launched recently is called VIVIZ. They’ve only been around since early 2022, which means things are just getting started for them! This girl group consists of three members who only go by their first names: Eunha, SinB, and Umji. Some of their songs are called “Bop Bop,” “Maniac,” and “Pull Up.” Along with singing, they’ve perfected their stage presence as choreography as well.

The Veronicas

Back in 2004, The Veronicas came to be. The pop duo originated in Australia, consisting of two identical twin sisters. Lisa and Jessica Origliasso are the talented stars who recorded songs like “Untouched,” “Revenge is Sweeter,” and “In My Blood” in the early 2000s.They snagged an ARIA Music Award for Best Pop Release for their single “Hook Me Up” in 2008. Things were heating up for The Veronicas back in the day, but they’ve slightly cooled down since.

Pixy

The relevance of K-Pop is undeniable these days, and there are many bands to enjoy. Pixy is a South Korean girl group that deserves its time to shine after forming in 2021. They’re currently signed to Allart Entertainment and Happy Tribe Entertainment. All five members of Pixy go by first names only — Lola, Dia, Sua, Dajeong and Rinji. One of the biggest songs from their first album was called “Wings.” Beyond that, they’ve also released “Stay With Me,” “Truth or Dare,” and “Call Me.”

Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are a Pop duo who linked up to record music together in 1998. They originally came from Calgary, Alberta in Canada. As their band name suggests, they go by their first names when it comes to their stage presence. Their full names are Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin.
