Then & Now: What These 15 Cars Cost 50 Years Ago vs. Today

How many people 50 years ago thought society would have self-driving cars in 2024? Unfortunately, folks are still forced to pay attention behind the wheels of their cars. Even with the popularity of remote work skyrocketing among millennials and Gen-Zers, people still need cars to zip around town. You can tell a lot about a person based on the type of car they’ve splurged on for themself. For example, if they drive a powerful truck that can tow nearly anything attached to the back, they most likely work with their hands.

It’s common to hear the roar of a Ford Mustang fly by you on the road. The sports car has plenty of bells and whistles in 2024 that make people eager to bring it home. However, there are plenty of folks who would rather swoop up a 1970s model Mustang. Those who do that typically replace their engines with something modern to make it sound like something straight out of the movies. In 1974, an average Mustang set someone back $3,500. Compare that to 2024 where the average Mustang costs 30,900, and it’s clear drivers in the 70s got a steal on their cars.

Another popular car to see cruising down the road is a Corvette.  In 1974, someone would spend just under $6,000 for their powerful mode of transportation. The body of a Corvette has changed ever so slightly to appear as though it’s from the year 2500. Today, someone will spend $70,000 on their new vehicle.
