The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made

The Most Expensive Movies Ever Made

As the decades pass, movie production costs get more and more expensive. “Fast X,” released in 2023, had a reported budget of $340.0 million. That’s an absurd number, considering the budgets of summer blockbusters released just over a decade ago. It seems that everyone in the movie industry is raising the stakes, and by proxy, their movie budgets. Even A24, the lauded arthouse production company, spent over $50 million to bring “Civil War” to the silver screen this year. While many contemporary movies feature staggering budgets, some productions remain the most expensive movies ever made.

The way Hollywood studios budget a movie continues to be a closely guarded secret. Not only do studios not itemize movie budgets, they often combine spending on individual movies into their overall expenses. Increasingly, movie budgets dedicate a good portion of their money to marketing. To ensure proper exposure of the film to the public before it is released, studios will dedicate large chunks of the movie’s budget to advertisements. Nor do these numbers specifically account for the amount of a movie’s budget dedicated to the salaries of top-billed actors.

There are also hidden write-offs, tax loopholes, and other mysterious expenses that get lost in the labyrinth known as “Hollywood Accounting.”

While the way production costs are calculated remains opaque, budgets usually reflect expectations of ticket sales. If a movie has a massive budget, like “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the studio expects to make back at least double in ticket sales. This projection doesn’t always prove accurate, however, as movies like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” failed to make back its $402.3 million budget. Whatever the case or accuracy of projections, some releases remain the most expensive movies ever made. In this article, we rank the top 100. (Also See The Highest Grossing Movies of All Time.)

To determine the most expensive movies ever made, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical data on production costs from film industry site The Numbers. Movies were ranked based on total reported production budget, adjusted for inflation. Data on worldwide box office is also from The Numbers. Production budget and box office figures were adjusted for inflation using historical ticket data from the National Association of Theatre Owners. Supplemental data on IMDb user rating is current as of June 2024.
