The Best Movies Starring Real Life Musicians

The Best Movies Starring Real Life Musicians

Music and movies have gone together almost since the day motion pictures were invented. Early movie theaters sometimes had orchestra pits, where live musicians provided themes keyed to scenes in silent films, and many more of movie palaces had pipe organs, whose commanding tones matched the actions and emotions depicted on-screen. The first sound films had no dialogue, but added synchronized pre-recorded musical tracks to the cinematic goings-on.

When dialogue entered the picture, as it were, actors who could sing and singers who could act won roles in movie musicals, from the Busby Berkeley extravaganzas of the late 1920s through the landmark productions of the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s (“The Wizard of Oz,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The King and I,” and scores of others), right up through the Disney animated entries of the ‘90s and beyond, and such recent story-centered songfests as the remakes of “A Star is Born” (2018) and “West Side Story” (2021).

Appearances in music-based films aside, a number of performers who are best known for their musical talents have appeared in dramatic or comedic roles over the decades. Some have played enough parts, without singing necessarily involved, to almost qualify as full-time actors in addition to their musical careers — for instance, Kris Kristofferson, Cher, David Bowie (who had roles in more than 20 films), Jennifer Lopez, Elvis Presley (who starred in 31 features, though he did do a lot of singing in them), and Frank Sinatra (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1953’s “From Here to Eternity”).

There have also been many singers cast in just one dramatic role or at most a handful, like Linda Ronstadt, Lady Gaga, and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. And at least one musical celebrity made a full-time transition to the thespian arts — Mark Wahlberg, who first gained fame as 1990s hip hop star Marky Mark before dedicating himself to acting in movies like “Boogie Nights” (1997),  “The Perfect Storm” (2000), “The Fighter” (2010), and “Transformers: The Last Knight” (2017). And speaking of actors, Bruce Willis is among those known almost entirely for their acting careers who nonetheless had three musical hits — versions of classic R&B songs, recorded in 1987. (Willis has never been nominated for an Academy Award. Here’s a list of the most nominated actors who have not won an Oscar.)

To determine the best movies starring real-life musicians, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies in which a musician with at least one song on the Billboard Hot 100 received top-three billing were considered, and documentaries were excluded. Cast information is from IMDb.

Scroll down to see a ranking of the best movies starring real-life musicians.

While some of the films on this list do feature the starring musicians actually doing their day jobs (singing), these are not movie musicals per se — they’re comedies or dramas that allow noted personalities to face new creative challenges and perhaps to underline the similarities between two different genres of performance.
