Avoid All Mustard Brands, Except These 7 Healthier Alternatives

Sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs wouldn’t be the same without mustard. There’s no doubt that mustard is one of the most popular condiments out there, whether you’re using it in a turkey sandwich or deviled eggs. However, you might wonder if mustard is healthy. If you take the time to see what’s in your favorite condiments, you’ll find that many condiments, like mustard, are often filled with undesirable ingredients. (Before you make a sandwich, check out this article on the best cold-cut meat brands.)

Mustard is a condiment made from mustard seeds. It’s made by mixing mustard seeds with vinegar, water, salt, and other seasonings. The specific ingredients of mustard can vary by brand and type of mustard. Some of the most popular types of mustard are yellow mustard, dijon mustard, honey mustard, and spicy brown mustard.

The trick to discovering the best mustard brands is finding ones with the simplest ingredients. While even the most popular mustard brands have a short list of ingredients, you might be looking for something without preservatives, added sugar and salt, or artificial flavors. This is especially true for those who have certain dietary restrictions or are on a certain diet.

Some popular brands of mustard have added sugar or ingredients such as xanthan gum, which is used as a thickening agent. If you’re looking for mustard brands that will fit your healthy lifestyle, there are a handful of options out there.

After reviewing Reddit and websites such as USA Today, EWG, and Eat This Not That, we determined some of the healthiest mustard brands in no particular order. Many of these brands are Whole30-approved, vegan, contain organic ingredients, and are free of unnecessary additives. Here are seven mustard brands with ingredients you can feel good about.

You’ll notice that Trader Joe’s Organic Yellow Mustard doesn’t have the nearly fluorescent yellow color most mustard brands have. That’s because the color of this organic mustard comes directly from the organic spices. This brand has no unnecessary additives or preservatives. The ingredient list includes organic vinegar, organic mustard seed, organic turmeric, organic paprika, and other spices. It also has 10-15 mg less sodium in one serving than many other mustard brands.
