Top Movies About Characters Who Don’t Fit In

How does one define a “loser” or “outcast?” According to Merriam-Webster, a “loser” is “someone who loses, especially consistently, while an “outcast” is defined as “someone who society refuses to accept.” These are labels that are less than appealing. Interestingly, author Mark Twain once described Huckleberry Finn as an outcast, someone other boys were warned not to associate with.

Being a “loser” or “outcast” isn’t a bad thing. In fact, being an individual is a positive trait in my eyes. If I look at where some of my classmates labeled “outcasts” or “losers” by their peers are now, some turned into successes. One ended up as a regular on the National Geographic reality show “Life Below Zero.” Your path as a kid doesn’t show where you’ll wind up, and that’s why I love to root for the outcasts.

We’re looking at the best movies about losers and outcasts. The characters in these movies have unique personalities and aren’t always accepted by their peers or society in general. Does it make them bad people? I don’t think so. Many of them are endearing with quirky personalities. (Find more examples of outcasts and losers in The Most Hated TV Characters of the 1960s.)

To determine the best movies about losers and outcasts, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 1,000 reviews on IMDb were considered, and documentaries were not excluded. Director information is from IMDb.
