The doughnut market is very lucrative – the 2023 revenue topped 8.8 billion dollars – and according to reports, there are almost 13,000 doughnut shops throughout the United States. Much of this belongs to doughnut behemoths like Dunkin’ Donuts, Krispy Kreme, and the popular Canadian brand, Tim Hortons (their Timbits are on par with munchkins). But it isn’t just these top companies that entice doughnut lovers across the United States.

For more than a century, people have been enjoying these delicious bites, often as a breakfast offering, but there is no hard rule as to when you can enjoy these treats. The first doughnut-making machine appeared in 1920, and doughnuts soon became commonplace at bakeries and diners. They were especially popular during the Depression because they cost less than a nickel and were reasonably filling, according to the Smithsonian Magazine.

Doughnuts are a highly popular confection, and should you wish for a sweet breakfast, an afternoon snack, or an after-dinner treat, you might want to opt for this round pastry, you can even combine it with another tasty favorite – ice cream – but make sure you don’t buy one of several brands recalled due to possible listeria contamination.

Doughnuts have evolved from simple fried dough to a versatile culinary canvas for innovation. Bakeries now top or fill them with an incredible array of ingredients from savory bacon to spicy jalapeños to indulgent foie gras. The creative possibilities seem endless, with some eateries using glazed donuts in place of buns for outrageously decadent sandwiches. (These are the strangest state fair foods ever.)
