The 50 US Cities With the Most Same-Sex Couples

The 50 US Cities With the Most Same-Sex Couples

In June Pride Month Celebrations were happening around the country. It’s a welcome commemoration for all types of love and relationships. It wasn’t always this way, however.

While support for same-sex unions began growing in the ‘90s, obstacles stood in place. Less than 30 years ago, the federal government signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law. This defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman and allowed states to deny marriage equality. Fortunately, the tide has shifted in the new millennium, providing support and rights for same-sex couples. Furthermore, many cities around the country have become havens, with many having thousands of same-sex couples.

Getting a read on the exact number of same-sex couples in the United States proves difficult. While the Census Bureau is undertaking strategies to get better measurements, federal tax returns give a sense of the current population. According to a study published by the Tax Policy Center, 250,450 same-sex married couples filed joint taxes the same year that same-sex marriage was legalized across the country (2015). On average, same-sex couples are younger and fall in a higher-income tax bracket. They are also less likely to declare dependent children.

While many of the same-sex couples were previously positioned in coastal cities, new perspectives and more welcoming legislation have allowed same-sex relationships to flourish across the country. Cities that previously served as sanctuaries for same-sex couples like San Francisco or Miami Beach remain on the list while smaller cities have bumped up in the rankings.

Furthermore, states that once denied the rights of same-sex couples have shifted gears, allowing same-sex couples to prosper in unexpected locales. These include places like Johnson City, Tennessee, and Humble, Texas. In this article, we will explore cities in the United States with the most same-sex couples. (Here’s a breakdown of when same-sex marriage was legalized in each state.)

To determine the cities with the most same-sex couples, 24/7 Tempo reviewed five-year data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Cities, towns, and Census-designated places were ranked based on the number of people in same-sex couples living together per 1,000 residents. Same-sex couples include married and unmarried partners. Supplemental data on median household income and total population are also from the ACS.
