Hollywood films run the gamut – action-adventure, comedy, horror, science fiction, and more. Each genre often appeals to a specific audience. Some people love horror and will watch every new release the moment it hits theaters. Some love science fiction and can't imagine not being the first to catch the latest flick. Others prefer comedy and enjoy spending a few hours losing themselves in laughter. Then there are the viewers who thoroughly enjoy heartbreaking movies.

Many of us love a good tearjerker and heartbreaking movies deliver every time. These films resonate so deeply that it feels as though we've lived the journey alongside each character. But what elicits sadness differs for everyone. Personal struggles may hit home, whether a doomed romance, dashed hopes, the demise of something cherished, the death of a loved one, a heroic sacrifice, or even animal mistreatment.

24/7 Tempo came up with a list of what we think could be heartbreaking movies that are brilliant masterpieces. We researched published lists of sad movies on the site Internet Movie Database (IMDb) and weighed in based on our own film-going experiences and definitions of "sad."

We began with more than 600 movies on the user-created lists of sad films found on IMDb to determine the saddest movies of all time. Next, we narrowed the list by choosing films most popular with amateur and professional viewers, considering the Rotten Tomatoes average critic and audience ratings and the IMDb average user ratings.

To compile this list of heartbreaking movies that are brilliant masterpieces, films needed at least 10,000 user ratings between IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, along with 10 approved Tomatometer critic reviews. From there, editorial discretion shaped the final rankings. (Don't miss the 50 best movies based on true events.)

Here are heartbreaking movies that are brilliant masterpieces.
