Pet ownership is climbing in the United States, with dogs leading the way, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The 2017-2018 edition of the Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook found that 38% of households owned one or more dogs — the highest percentage since the AVMA began its survey in 1982.

There are many different breeds to choose from — the American Kennel Club (AKC) now recognizes 193. The latest breed to gain recognition is the Azawakh, a West African sighthound that was added in 2019. The latest additions to 24/7 Tempo’s list of the 100 most popular breeds are the Tibetan terrier and the Lagotto Romagnolo, which were recognized in 1973 and 2015, respectively.

To identify the 100 most popular breeds in the United States, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data from the American Kennel Club.

Some breeds have been consistently popular over the years, with golden and Labrador retrievers and German shepherds regularly dominating popularity rankings. In fact, the Labrador retriever has topped the AKC’s list of most popular breeds in the U.S. since 1991. Golden and Labrador retrievers are especially popular among families. German shepherd popularity is reflected in the fame they gained in motion pictures. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Rin Tin Tin, who starred in films and a long-running TV series. These are the most famous dogs dogs of all time.
