When it was released in May 1977, “Star Wars” opened in just 42 theaters. The film quickly broke box office records, openedֵ in a greater number of theaters, and began to make history as the biggest franchise in cinema history.
Today, nine of the 10 live action Star Wars films — including the anthology films — are among the 100 top grossing movies in America. And “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the all-time top grossing flick worldwide. The franchise has become so popular that fans have designated May 4th — which sounds like the famous line, “May the force be with you” — as Star Wars Day.
Critics point to several reasons why the films have had so much success. The movie that would eventually be called “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” portrayed a reluctant hero’s journey on an epic, intergalactic scale. The film employed cutting-edge special and visual effects that still hold up today. It also had one of the most recognizable film scores of all time.
But perhaps the most important element of the series’ enduring quality is its characters, who have helped the franchise remain successful for over 40 years, with Walt Disney Studios recently announcing more movies to come.
